Daikin cools the airwaves

UK: Known to be cool when it comes to airwaves, Daikin UK has supplied a free air conditioning system to a youth-led radio station in South London.

Reprezent 107.3FM, London’s only radio station presented entirely by young people, can now breathe more easyily, thanks to the installation of the air conditioning system by TechniCool Air Conditioning Ltd.

With an FM listenership of 120,000, Reprezent 107.3FM is the ‘voice of young London’ and campaigns on issues such as mental health, housing and youth unemployment. It has helped thousands of young people develop their skills and talents, represent youth issues and increase their employability.

The radio station is based in POP Brixton, an exciting mix of offices, studios, food and retail spaces, created from low-cost, low-energy shipping containers. It is a hub for start-up businesses, entrepreneurs and local community groups.

Reprezent is an award-winning social enterprise that delivers accredited radio and media training courses for young people aged 13-24, especially those from disadvantaged areas and not in employment, education or training.

“With over 100 young people broadcasting from Reprezent’s studios in POP Brixton, it got incredibly hot and stuffy,” explained Reprezent director Shane Carey. “The Daikin team visited the studio to find the best solution, and recommended a unit which would work well for our unique environment.”

Donated by Daikin UK and installed for free by TechniCool Air Conditioning based in Coulsdon, Surrey, the new air conditioning system will ensure the radio station has a comfortable indoor climate all year round.

After completing the installation with his colleague, Dominic Newman, TechniCool Air Conditioning Ltd engineer Steve Trowbridge said, “We were privileged to be able to carry out the installation, it’s great to be involved in a project that will positively impact on the future of Reprezent and the young people the organisation supports.”

Installed at the Reprezent radio station is a 5kW under ceiling unit, part of the FLXS Flexi-wall and ceiling range.

Dirk Slagmulder, managing director of Daikin UK said, “When we heard about Reprezent’s work with young people and the issues they were having with uncontrollable temperatures in the studio, we wanted to help out by giving them an even better climate for success. We are lucky to work with like-minded partners, such as TechniCool, who are also keen to make a difference – and they did a great job at POP Brixton. Now the presenters and behind the scenes support technicians at Reprezent can not only enjoy the radio station but also the atmosphere in the studio.”
