ADAPTIX designed to boost CO2 system efficiency
20th October 2026
ITALY: Rivacold has developed ADAPTIX, a patented technology designed to improve CO2 transcritical refrigeration systems throughout the year.
According to the manufacturer, the technology can deliver energy savings of up to 30% when used on its own and up to 40% when combined with other energy-saving technologies.
ADAPTIX continuously adapts system operating parameters to ambient conditions and cooling demand. It is designed to optimise discharge pressure, increase evaporation temperature and reduce compressor power demand.
It is said to combine dedicated mechanical components with Rivacold proprietary electronic control and smart algorithms.
The system integrates a high-efficiency heat exchanger, a precision three-way regulating valve, temperature and pressure sensors, and the RIV-EVO control board.
On the discharge side, ADAPTIX helps reduce CO2 temperature at the gas-cooler outlet, contributing to less flash gas and lower discharge pressure. On the evaporator side, it is said to increases evaporation temperature and pressure, reducing the compression ratio and the energy required by the compressors. The optimised operating point can also enable very low superheat, potentially reducing ice formation and defrost cycles, Rivacold says.
Optimised superheat and a reduced compression ratio help maintain stable operation under demanding conditions, such as peak cooling demand or high ambient temperatures.
It can operate as a stand-alone technology or in combination with other energy-saving solutions, including parallel compression, ejectors and two-stage systems.
The unit has been installed on a Rivacold TX system at a supermarket in central Italy. Initial field data are said to have shown a net energy saving of 18-22%. The 32 kW MT system has been operating since June 2026, with testing based on alternating 24-hour periods with ADAPTIX switched on and off.
ADAPTIX is available as an optional feature for selected Rivacold R744 condensing units and compressor racks, depending on product configuration and installation requirements. Retrofitting may be possible following an assessment of the complete system.
