Cuba set to increase ODS destruction
CUBA: The destruction of ozone-depleting refrigerants in Cuba is set to increase with the construction of a new incinerator.
While Cuba achieved the destruction of 258.4kg of ODS last year, the construction of the new ODS destruction plant at a cement factory in the city of Sancti Spiritus is expected to greatly increase this.
The facility is part of a demonstration project of collection, recovery, storage, transport and regeneration of ODS, a joint initiative between Cuba’s Specialist Technical Ozone Office and the UN’s Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol.
Cuba has stored ODS after replacing more than 2.5 million refrigerators and 300,000 domestic air conditioners over the last 10 years, as part of the country’s Energy Revolution to introduce more energy efficient models.
