European heat pump sales on the rise

BELGIUM: The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) is reporting increased residential heat pump sales in Europe in the first six months of the year.
Based on figures from 12 European countries – Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden – the EHPA says sales rose by 11% during the period. Around 1,163,000 were sold – up from 1,048,000 in the first half of 2025.
The EHPA attributes the rise to increased oil and gas prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the European Commission publishing plans encouraging EU governments to lower electricity tax.
Claiming that Europe was ending its addiction to gas, EHPA director general Paul Kenny said: “The sooner electricity becomes the most affordable solution, the quicker we’ll get clean. The fix? Dropping taxes on electricity and shifting them over to fossil fuels. The European Commission has made this clear – but now all EU governments must enact it, following in the footsteps of the Netherlands and Belgium.”
In its Electrification Action Plan, the European Commission said that tax on electricity should be no higher than that on gas. It is proposing a revision of the network charges consumers pay on their power bills to reward flexible options like heat pumps.
