High GWP refrigerants down in price

EUROPE: Prices for the high GWP gases/mixtures in Europe went down slightly in the second quarter of this year, compared with Q2/2024.

The latest figures from the European Commission reveal that both R410A and R134a prices were down 3% at end-user level in Q2. A price update on R404A was not available for the quarter.

At the OEM level, prices decreased on average by 1%, with the most notable change being for R407C and R410A, both down by 3%.

The prices of lower GWP alternatives along the supply chain (excluding end-user prices) varied compared to the same quarter last year. R448A and R449A were both up 5%, while prices of R32 and R513A showed no change. Prices of low GWP “natural” alternatives remained stable (R290 +0% and R744 +0%).

The development of average HFC purchase prices

The purchase price of reclaimed R404A did not change significantly compared to Q1/2025. In Q1/2025, the purchase price of reclaimed R404A was at 140% the price level of virgin R404A material.

In general, the EU refrigerant market is reported to have been stable in terms of supply, with no indications of limited regional availability or shortage.

The price of quota authorisations was reported to range from €11 to €25/t CO2e. On average, purchasing prices for quota authorisations amounted to €16/t CO2e, approximately. This represented a 6% decrease on the previous quarter.

The Q2/2025 report is compiled from returns from 56 companies from 10 EU member states, predominantly from Germany, France, Poland and Italy. This included three gas producers, 16 gas distributors, 27 OEMs, and 10 respondents from the service sector.
