Honeywell offers app to verify HFC refrigerants

UAE: Honeywell has launched a smartphone app in an effort to combat counterfeit versions of its Genetron brand of HFC refrigerants and blends.

Launched at a customer event at Honeywell headquarters in Dubai, the new app provides proof of authenticity of Honeywell’s Genetron brand of refrigerants, which have been a particular target for counterfeiters in the Middle East region.

Honeywell maintains that fake refrigerants can cause a variety of issues, ranging from increased energy use and decreased cooling performance, to significantly reducing the operating life of systems and causing injury and equipment failures. They can also damage air conditioning and can contain dangerous chemicals. According to research by the speciality gas supplier Linde, as little as 2% of the wrong chemicals present in a refrigerant mix can cause costly system failure.

In addition to verifying a Genetron refrigerant purchase, the app provides product information and quick access to technical help.

“The launch of the Genetron app highlights Honeywell’s commitment to using the latest technologies to create safer communities and industries,” said Amir Naqvi, regional business leader, Middle East, Turkey, and Africa, Honeywell Fluorine Products. “This platform is a step forward in helping our customers authenticate our refrigerants as the industry grapples with counterfeit refrigerants in the market.”

The Genetron app is free to use for customers and can be downloaded from iOS and Android app stores.
