Romanian police seize illegal refrigerant

ROMANIA: Border police from Suceava have seized 12 cylinders of illegal refrigerant in the Romanian town of Vicovu de Sus on the border with Ukraine.

The refrigerant was discovered, yesterday (April 1), hidden in a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van, registered in Ukraine and driven by a 41-year-old man with dual Romanian and Ukrainian citizenship.

The type of refrigerant has not been revealed by the police but, based upon an obscured image, appears to be HFC134a in illegal disposable cylinders. Police have valued the seized gas at 8,856 leu (€1,785).

The driver is said to face charges of qualified smuggling and the transport and transit of dangerous substances and preparations, in violation of the legal provisions in force.
