Worker dies in refrigerant plant leak
11th September 2025
INDIA: One person died and 12 were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday (10 September) after a leak in a pipeline at the Gujarat Fluorochemicals refrigerant plant in Ranjitnagar, India.
According to the company, a minor rupture in one of the bellows in the gas pipeline lead to a “temporary” gas leak.
The New Indian Express website reports that the incident took place between 12:00 and 12:30 local time, with the gas escape causing nausea, dizziness, and vomiting amongst workers. The refrigerant was reported to be R32.
In its report to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the company said that the situation was “instantly brought under control” through the plant’s safety mechanisms. Sprinklers were activated, and plant operations were halted. Press reports say that the leak was contained within 15–20 seconds.
All personnel were said to have been immediately evacuated from the affected area.
Regarding the fatality, Gujarat Fluorochemicals said that, while the post-mortem report is awaited, “prima facie it appears to be during the rush of evacuation process”.
“We deeply regret this incident and the loss of life,” the company said. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the bereaved family, and we are extending our full support during this difficult time.”
An investigation into the incident is underway.
