52MW chillers is largest LG order

LG has supplied 16 absorption chillers of different capacities to the Starfield Goyang complex

SOUTH KOREA: LG Electronics has supplied 16 absorption chillers totalling 52MW of refrigeration capacity for the Starfield Goyang shopping and entertainment complex in Gyeonggi Province, Korea.

Made up of two underground levels, with four floors above ground, at 365,000m² Starfield Goyang is the largest indoor shopping theme park in Korea’s northwestern area. Supplying 14,720RT, the order represents the largest of LG Electronics’ products supplied to commercial buildings in Korea.

In addition to a Shinsegae Department Store and wholesale discount store E mart Traders, Starfield Goyang includes a spa and water park facility, indoor sports facility, a cinema, and other entertainment facilities. Opened last year, the complex also includes a food court with over 100 restaurants to choose from.

The LG chillers use 95℃ hot water from the nearby Ilsan CHP plant, which is otherwise mainly used for winter district heating.

LG has been making chillers for large commercial buildings for nearly 50 years. Things took a more serious turn in 2011 with LG’s $134.4m acquisition of Korean manufacturer LS Mtron’s chiller business. A significant step in LG Electronics’ drive to increase its presence in the global chiller market has been the relocation of its Korean chiller plant from Jeonju to its 35,000m² factory in Pyeongtaek.
