Further CO2 heat pump for Aalborg seawater DH project

SWITZERLAND/DENMARK: MAN Energy Solutions is to supply a further CO2 heat pump to one of the world’s largest naturally-cooled seawater heat pump plants in Aalborg, Denmark.

MAN was originally contracted by Danish multi-utility company Aalborg Forsyning to supply three 44MW heat pump units to the project which is scheduled to start construction next month. The company has now received an order for a fourth unit, bringing the total heating capacity to 177MW.

Situated on the northern bank of the Limfjord strait, the district heating plant will use seawater as a heat source. The heat pumps will use electricity from Aalborg Forsyning’s renewable sources to elevate the water temperature from 1-15°C up to 98°C.

Collectively, the plant will supply up to 700,000MWh of heat annually, or equivalent to one-third of Aalborg’s heat production. CO2 emissions are projected to be reduced by up to 210,000 tons annually compared to the city’s coal-fired power plant, which scheduled for closure in 2028.

The four oil-free, hermetically-sealed HOFIM motor-compressor units are manufactured and tested by MAN Energy Solutions in Zurich, Switzerland.

The compressor uses a high-speed motor and active magnetic bearings, enabling it to operate without the need for a dry gas seal system and a lube oil system.

MAN Energy Solutions is executing the project in collaboration with two partners: Bilfinger is responsible for the design and construction of the mechanical systems, while ACS handles the design and implementation of the electrical infrastructure.

Aalborg Forsyning is taking over the heat pump system by 2027 after a period of testing and commissioning.
