Samsung stars at the Junction

UK: Samsung has delivered state of the art heating and cooling to a new bar, restaurant, cafe, and social workspace within Manchester Central, the city’s convention centre.

Opened last year, Junction incorporates a range of Samsung equipment including three VRF systems.

The new space, with its capacity for over 200, is situated within Manchester Central, the city’s convention centre that opened inside the former Manchester Central Station as the G-Mex in 1986.

A key feature of the architect’s design was circles and clean lines, from the lighting to the ductwork diffusers, so Samsung’s 360 circular cassettes were the natural choice to blend in seamlessly.

There are different ceiling types from the exposed, industrial look to solid ceiling, so the 360s versatility was seen as key, being available with corner panels for building into the ceiling.

Where the structural ceiling was exposed all the service pipework and equipment was on show, therefore, the project’s success hinged on meticulous attention to detail, from ensuring high-quality finishes to creating an inviting atmosphere that meets both aesthetic and functional standards.

Three Samsung 30kW DVM Eco VRF systems were installed, each with three 10kW 360 cassettes. An additional Samsung 25kW twin split with two 12kW 360 cassettes was also installed. The 360 cassettes were a mix of black circular and white square finishes.

The finishing touch was the Touch Centralised Controller (TCC 2.0) which gives the client control of all equipment from one central point.

“The design of Junction’s HVAC system was integral to achieving its open and futuristic feel,” explained Andy Kelly, the facilities and infrastructure director of Manchester Central Convention Complex.  Exposed ducting and lighting panels not only blend seamlessly with the industrial aesthetic but enhance it, adding to the venue’s modern, airy vibe.”

The M&E consultant for the project was Hulley & Kirkwood. Installers were Bredbury-based Set Point 22 Ltd.
