Carrier boosts 30XF data centre chiller efficiency

FRANCE: Carrier unveiled its enhanced AquaForce 30XF chiller featuring its new FreeBoost technology at this week’s Data Centre World in Paris.

Part of its QuantumLeap Solutions portfolio, Carrier says the updated chiller is specifically engineered for high-performance data centres to deliver outstanding energy efficiency, a quiet operating environment and ultra-fast capacity recovery under high ambient temperatures.

Already optimised for free cooling, the updated AquaForce 30XF now features FreeBoost technology, enhancing mechanical cooling performance as well.

According to Carrier, the patented FreeBoost system is a subsystem to boost mechanical cooling efficiency, even when outside temperatures are moderate or high. It uses the chiller’s existing hydronic free-cooling components to optimise the potential of cold air to achieve high seasonal efficiency up to 25 under data centre conditions and enables best-in-class PUE levels below 1.2. These performances are both PEP ecopassport and Eurovent certified.

The AquaForce 30XF chiller was introduced last March, and uses R1234ze refrigerant.

Aritz Calvo, Carrier Climate Solutions Europe’s screw chillers and heat pumps product manager, maintains that the 30XF’s combination of higher energy efficiency and reduced power input lowers the total cost of ownership. “Factor in the unit’s reduced height to simplify installation into existing infrastructures, and our customers can optimise both their capital and operating expenses,” he said.

“Because the updated 30XF’s new design lowers the power input, customers now have the choice to either reduce their generator size or increase the IT power capacity, thereby supporting the operation of more servers,” added colleague Jérémie Chang, Carrier Climate’s data centre vertical marketing manager.

Operational continuity is said to be achieved with ultra-fast capacity recovery of 60-120sec, even under extreme conditions, while optimised performance up to 55°C maintains stability during heat extremes.

Acoustic performance has also been improved, with the 30XF operating down to 94dB(A).
