Lu-Ve’s virus-busting LED light

ITALY: Igea is a new hygiene filter from Lu-Ve Group to sanitise the air and eliminate viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.

Named after the Greek goddess of health, cleanliness and hygiene, the Igea kit is said to be simple to install and can be applied on all commercial dual discharge air coolers produced by Lu-Ve Exchangers, Alfa Lu-Ve and AIA.

It uses photocatalysts with WO3 (tungsten trioxide) activated by LED light to eliminate viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. When exposed to visible light, the WO3 absorbs and converts the light energy into electrons and electron-holes. WO3 reacts with water (air humidity) to produce hydroxyl radicals and with oxygen to produce superoxide anions.

Tests conducted by the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan are said to have shown a 100% reduction in the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 after only 30 minutes of use.

Further tests performed by the University of Salento have also shown that Igea can reduce the amount of the hormone ethylene, which is responsible for the ripening of vegetables. This reduction postpones their spoilage, extending the shelf life of foodstuffs by up to 15 days.

Unlike traditional UV lamps, the LED technology does not emit harmful rays so does not compromise the safety of people and animals. In addition, it is said to more energy efficient.
