UK must push ahead of F-gas regs to meet climate targets

UK: Advisors have called on the UK government to restrict F-gases to uses where there are currently no viable alternatives, pending a complete phase out.

In its 2019 Progress Report published today, the Committee on Climate Change says UK action to curb greenhouse gas emissions is lagging far behind what is needed to meet its legally-binding emissions targets.

Amongst a number of recommendations made last year, the Committee advised the government to set out an approach to reduce emissions from refrigeration and air conditioning further and faster than the ambition of the F-gas regulation.

Since then it says that the government has delivered just one of 25 critical policies needed to get emissions reductions back on track.

Amongst a number of key areas highlighted, the Committee says the government has failed to publish a plan to restrict the use of F-gases to the very limited uses where there are currently no viable alternatives.

Having legislated for net-zero emissions by 2050, the Committee says the government must show it is serious about its legal obligations to tackle and prepare for climate change.
