Canada pledges CAD2bn for heat pump installs
9th October 2026
CANADA: The Canadian government is pledging CAD2bn (€1.25bn) over eight years to boost the installation of heat pumps.
Prime minister Mark Carney announced the incentive yesterday (Thursday) to support up to 820,000 households to retrofit to the more energy efficient heating option.
Homeowners will be able to apply for the rebate when their existing heating system breaks down – or when they plan to replace a heating system that is approaching end of life.
The size of the grant will depend on household income. Up to $10,000 will be available for households below the median income, while those above that level of income will be able to claim $2,000.
Government data suggests 80% of HVAC replacements occur when current systems break. The new programme is trying to cater to this group of individuals and provide a path to switching over to heat pumps accordingly.
