Carrier chiller factory sends zero waste to landfill

USA: Carrier’s chiller factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, has become its first commercial HVAC facility in the US to achieve zero waste to landfill certification.

The Charlotte facility achieved the certification through a rigorous waste reduction process in partnership with Heritage Interactive Services, a US supplier of customised waste and recycling programmes. It ensures all waste is converted to energy and other uses rather than sent to a landfill.

The certification was awarded after a three-month data review verifying 100% landfill diversion of all wastes through alternative management methods, including source reduction and reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and chemical and physical treatments.

The Charlotte site is the fourth Carrier location globally to earn this designation. The others are its digital solutions site in Salem, Oregon,  the flame safeguard controls and burner management factory in Derry, New Hampshire, and its residential gas furnaces business in Indianapolis.
