CFCs found in Swiss groundwater

SWITZERLAND: Mystery surrounds the source of traces of CFCs found in groundwater samples in the Fraubrunnen area of Bern.

The Bern Office for Water and Waste says the concentrations are partly above the permissible maximum value of 10ml/litre but insists that there is no danger to the population as the drinking water supply in the region is not affected by this incident. Emmental drinking water draws water from two sources in the municipality of Rüderswil, south of Burgdorf.

Further samples and tests are being carried out in the Burgdorf – Utzenstorf area to determine the extent of the problem and to locate the origin of the CFCs.
