Danfoss and Engie collaborate on R600a chiller

DENMARK/GERMANY: Danfoss and Engie Refrigeration are collaborating in the development of a high performance chiller employing a Turbocor compressor using R600a (isobutane) refrigerant.

The Danfoss Turbocor TNS385, an oil-free compressor specifically designed for use with R600a, was first previewed at Mostra Convegno in March.

This collaboration combines the expertise of Danfoss in oil-free compressor technology and its application in refrigeration systems, alongside Engie Refrigeration’s know-how in refrigeration system design, system integration, testing, and qualification.

Following laboratory tests at Danfoss, the compressor is now being tested in a specially developed refrigeration prototype in collaboration with Engie Refrigeration. The current development phase focuses on the compressor’s performance, system integration and control, as well as the specific safety requirements associated with using an A3 flammability refrigerant like R600a. By collaborating, the compressor and refrigeration system can be tested and evaluated as a complete system before market launch.

The TNS385 has been specifically adapted for operation with R600a in air-cooled chillers. Initial development data indicates a nominal cooling capacity of approximately 385kW for comfort air conditioning under defined conditions. The goal is an energy-efficient chiller for the comfort air conditioning of large buildings.

Danfoss plans to introduce the TNS385 gradually and in a controlled manner throughout 2027, subject to the successful completion of the remaining validation and qualification activities.

The first phase involves close collaboration with selected customers. This will allow for further insights into application, safety, and system integration requirements before broader commercial availability is assessed.

Engie Refrigeration’s chiller platform is also still under development, so a launch date for the complete chiller series is yet to be announced.
