F-gas revision passes ENVI vote

ENVI chair Paul Canfin presiding over yesterday’s vote

EUROPE: As expected, the European Parliament’s environment committee (ENVI) rubber-stamped the European F-gas revision proposals, yesterday, voting 68 to 11 in support of the document.

It was opposed by the Identity and Democracy Party (IDR), by two Italian members of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR) and a non-attached Hungarian member. There were six abstentions.

The provisional deal to revise the European F-gas regulation was agreed by the European Parliament and Council on October 5. It will see specific bans on the use of HFCs and HFOs and a complete phase out of HFCs by 2050.

COREPER, the European Council’s main preparatory body, has already formally agreed the compromise text. On October 18, the chairman of COREPER, Raul Fuentes Milani, confirmed the agreement to Pascal Canfin, chair of the environment committee.

A further reading will take place, probably in January. Once this process is complete the new F-gas regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and is expected to enter into force in spring 2024.
