Italian crackdown on illegal HFC continues

ITALY: Customs officials in Italy have made further seizures of quota-busting refrigerants, this time in Varese.

Following yesterday’s report of a seizure of 10 tons of illegal refrigerant in Milan, officials from the Varese Anti-fraud office of the Customs and Monopolies Agency have seized 2.5 tons of Chinese-made HFC refrigerants from Turkey.

The seizure, said to have been carried out in close collaboration with the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), comprised 138 cylinders, valued at around €27,500.

It has not been revealed what refrigerant was involved, but photos suggest that at least some of it was R404A. The importation was said to have been made without the necessary quota allocation.
