Record heat pump sales in Germany

GERMANY: Sales of heat pumps reached record levels in Germany last year on the back of high subsidy rates and more stringent energy policies.

According to the trade association Bundesverband Wärmepumpe (BWP), sales rose rose by 17% last year to 66,500 and beating the previous best year of 2008.

Ground-source heat pump sales increased by 21.8% to 20,700 units, while sales of air-source units increased by 14.5% from to 45,800 in 2016.

Although a heat pump is used in one-in-three newly built houses, market share remains below 5%.
