Source identified as LD death toll rises to 5
SPAIN: The cooling tower of a heat treatment plant is suspected as being responsible for the legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Sabedell which has now killed five.
Health authorities in Catalonia are also now working on the possibility of two outbreaks of legionnaires disease after five cases and three mores death attributed to the disease were found in Ripollet, a town just 10km from Sabadell. The outbreaks are not thought to be connected.
The cooling tower thought to be responsible for the Sabedell outbreak was found to be “deeply” infected with the legionella bacteria when tested on September 17. If confirmed as the source, the company responsible could face a fine of up to €600,000.”
The source of the outbreak in Ripollet is not known.
