Carrier USX Edge chiller for data centres

JAPAN: Carrier Japan has begun sales of a data centre specification version of its modular air-cooled Universal Smart X (USX) Edge chiller.

This new series is said to further improve energy efficiency in high-temperature chilled water ranges and shortens the time required to recover 100% capacity after a power outage.

Since its launch in 2006, the USX has evolved as a modular air-cooled chiller employing a fully enclosed rotary compressor, and has achieved over 70,000 units in a wide range of applications, including data centres.

Data centres are experiencing an increasing use of high-temperature chilled water above 20°C for server cooling, and conventional chillers designed primarily for low-temperature chilled water ranges have faced challenges in achieving sufficient energy-saving performance.

In addition, since the supply of chilled water must continue even after a power outage or other shutdown, shortening the time from restart to 100% capacity operation is an important element in equipment design and operation.

The newly developed USX data centre specification is said to address these challenges, achieving improved efficiency in the high-temperature chilled water range and fast recovery after shutdown, while also contributing to the overall efficiency of the equipment by standardising harmonic suppression.

The operating range in the low-pressure region has been expanded to maintain high efficiency even under the high-temperature chilled water conditions common in data centres. As a result, Carrier maintains that the COP has been significantly improved and the energy saving effect is higher in high-temperature chilled water environments. This effect is also expected to be effective in supporting liquid cooling systems, which are expected to advance in the future.

The time required to restart and return to 100% capacity operation after a shutdown can be achieved in just 117 seconds for the 60hp model and 150 seconds for the 70hp model, Carrier claims. Redesigned control logic optimises pre-startup processing and compressor stage control. This allows for reduced storage tank capacity, contributing to reduced installation space and construction costs.

A PWM converter is installed as a harmonic suppression measure as standard, reducing current distortion to less than 5%.
