Copeland scrolls for heat pump applications
15th August 2025
USA: Copeland has announced two new variable-speed scroll compressor series for a wide range of commercial and residential heat pump applications.
According to Copeland, the YAW and YAV variable-speed compressor platforms help heat pump manufacturers overcome heating capacity challenges in cold climate applications down to -25°F (-32ºC).
The new compressors are engineered to deliver the heating capacities and efficiencies required to meet the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) cold climate heat pump (CCHP) standard, which calls on OEMs and researchers to partner, develop and commercialise the next generation of cold climate heat pumps.
In part-load conditions, YAV variable-speed scroll compressors modulate to match lower-capacity requirements. In cold climate scenarios, these compressors can overspeed to produce the extra heating capacity.
Available in tonnage ranges for both residential and commercial applications, the YAW platform is said to feature a multitude of innovations, including scroll enhancements for lower GWP A2L refrigerant optimisation, a new scroll design to improve heating and cooling efficiencies, and an injection port on the compressor for an enhanced vapour injection loop.
Its design is said to enable OEMs to precisely inject vapour during the compression cycle while providing subcooling to the refrigerant before entering the evaporator. Copeland maintains that this can increase heating capacity by up to 25% and heating efficiency up to 10%.
