Octopus gives heat pumps a new look

UK: Renewable energy provider Octopus has launched a radical new design of heat pump as part of a complete smart heating system.

The Cosy 6 heat pump is offered with Octopus Energy’s Cosy Hub home controls system and Cosy Pod room sensors, wrapped up in a bespoke smart tariff in a package known as Cosy Octopus.

The 6kW heat pump uses propane refrigerant and is aimed at a typical three-bedroom UK home. It was designed by Dr Jason Cassells, CEO of Octopus-acquired Renewable Energy Devices (now known as Octopus Heating) and manufactured in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Larger heat pump models are promised over the next six months.

The home controls system Cosy Hub and Cosy Pods were developed by a team in London led by electrical engineer Derya Robinson.

Cosy Octopus is said to be free for homes that don’t need any work to fit the system after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Homes that need adjustments – such as new radiators, piping or a hot water tank – will get the system from around £3,000 after the grant, Octopus says.

Octopus consumers will be offered the best performance at the cheapest and greenest times, allowing customers to save money on heating bills without compromising on comfort.

The company entered the heat pump market in 2021 with a heat pump R&D centre in Slough. Since then the company is said to have invested over £50m to drive the rollout of heat pumps in the UK.
