BUS boost for households on heating oil
26th June 2026
UK: The UK government has announced a 20% increase in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant to £9,000.
The increase from 21 July is designed to to help rural households make the move from heating oil to a heat pump.
Leaflets will be dropping onto the doormats of 200,000 eligible homes in England and Wales this week with more information on how to claim the extra funding.
“The Boiler Upgrade Scheme continues to play a vital role in supporting households to adopt heat pumps, and this £1,500 uplift will make the transition significantly more affordable for the thousands of oil-heated homes,” said Charlotte Lee, CEO, Heat Pump Association UK, said:
Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, described the uplift as an important step in making heat pumps more accessible to rural households, allowing them to see the benefits the technology can offer.
While welcoming the move for rural households, Mitsubishi Electric’s heat pump expert, Achilleas Georgiou, said: “While the extra funding under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme from £7,500 to £9,000 will make heat pumps more accessible to these households, renewable alternatives like heat pumps will be out of reach for millions of UK homes as long as electricity remains three to four times more expensive per kW/h than gas.”
