Copper thief jailed

UK: A metal thief who caused thousands of pounds of damage after stripping copper pipes from industrial refrigerators has been jailed for a year and ten months.

Nathan Mahoney is said to have targeted a business in Eldon Way, Paddock Wood, Kent, stealing copper from eight industrial refrigerators on 16 December 2019. The unnamed company then reported further offences at the same location on 10 February this year, when an air conditioning unit rendered useless after the first theft was also stolen.

The cost of repairs and loss of stock resulting from the damage caused was estimated to be more £33,000.

Mahoney pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to charges of criminal damage and theft, as well as unrelated charges of dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.
