EIA urges further measures on F-gas phase down
5th November 2025
UK: The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has welcomed UK government plans to speed up the F-gas phase-down but urges further measures to protect the planet.
The consultation, published today (November 5) proposes changing the HFC phase-down in the F gas regulation by adjusting the existing schedule from 2027 and adding further steps from 2030 until 2050.
Although welcoming the “long overdue” proposal, the EIA has expressed concern over the lack of additional policy measures to ensure effective implementation of the phase-down.
“We urge the UK government to also rapidly consult on additional measures needed to ensure effective implementation, including new equipment bans, natural refrigerant training, MDIs and new measures to address illegal trade,” said EIA climate campaign leader Clare Perry.
The EIA seeks implementation in line with the approach taken by the EU, with early bans on the use of HFC in key equipment types, the need for training and certification of engineers in natural refrigerant alternative technologies and enhancing the recovery of refrigerants.
It also emphasises that the revised EU F-gas regulation also implemented a series of measures to curb the illegal HFC trade.
