National warns of illegal R1234yf
11th June 2026
UK: National Refrigerants has warned of unlicensed R1234yf being imported to the UK in illegal cylinders.
The Leicestershire-based refrigerant supplier claims to have recently identified R1234yf cylinders in the UK market. Investigations indicate that the cylinders originated from China and may contain unauthorised R1234yf.
Analysis is said to have confirmed that the refrigerant does not originate from a manufacturer licensed to produce the refrigerant. Reports also indicate that it may lack the stabilising additives used to help protect charging equipment and hose assemblies.
The cylinders also breach UK laws by not including the necessary markings. Since 2021, cylinders manufactured or placed into service in the UK must carry the UK transportable pressure equipment mark.
The contents weight is not displayed as required under transport regulations, and also display conflicting tare weight information.
National Refrigerants warns that using illegal refrigerant products can expose businesses to compliance, safety, and equipment performance risks.
