EC consults on energy labelling and ecodesign
10th December 2025
EUROPE: The European Commission has opened a public consultation as part of review of four EU regulations to encourage the manufacture of more energy-efficient refrigerators.
The review aims to expand product requirements beyond energy efficiency and energy consumption to also cover reparability and recyclability, amongst others.
The consultation process is designed in the form of two surveys on ecodesign and energy labelling, one covering household fridges and the other covering commercial fridges such as those used in supermarkets.
To ensure this work is well informed, the Commission has launched a consultation questionnaire and invitation to submit further evidence, seeking input from the public, companies and businesses, academic/research institutions, business associations, and consumer and environmental organisations. Feedback received will help shape future policies to ensure that they remain effective, efficient, and aligned with technological and market developments.
The specific regulations for commercial refrigeration in focus for this work are (EU) 2019/2024 Ecodesign requirements for refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function and (EU) 2019/2018 Energy labelling of refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function.
The products affected are supermarket refrigerator and freezer cabinets, ice cream freezers, refrigerating vending machines, gelato-scooping cabinets and beverage coolers.
The questionnaire aims to collect evidence both for the evaluation of the current ecodesign and energy labelling regulations for refrigerating appliances, and for the impact assessment of the new policy options.
Access to the questionnaire is via the Have Your Say website.
The consultation is open until 26 February 2026.
