European citizens back heat pump switch
9th June 2026
EUROPE: A new YouGov poll is said to have indicated that European citizens see clean energy independence as a safety issue, not just a climate concern.
The poll, conducted in May by the UK-based market research and data business, across five major EU countries, found a majority supported increased government financial support for heat pumps and believe that reducing dependence on fossil fuels would make the continent safer.
The poll was commissioned by E3G, Transport & Environment, and the Electrification Alliance. The results are based on polls of over 1000 citizens in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland.
The survey found that more than half of respondents back government financial support for heat pumps: Italy (71%), France (66%), Germany (61%), Spain (58%), and Poland (51%).
Commenting on the results, Paul Kenny, director general of the European Heat Pump Association said: “Safety and security go beyond party politics, as these results show. Europeans realise that heat pumps and other electrification measures reduce our dependence on expensive and harmful fossil fuel imports from unreliable exporters. The EU and national governments would be wise to heed their citizens and speed up the transition.”
