INDIA: A refrigeration engineer died and his co-worker injured while servicing an air conditioning unit at the University of Delhi on Friday afternoon.

Media reports are confused but most point to an explosion of the compressor. According to the Times of India, fire officials who attended the scene said the air conditioner’s compressor apparently exploded while the engineers were brazing it after filling it with gas.

In a statement, the University confirmed that there had been an accident in the air conditioner unit on the roof-top of the biotechnology block.

“One mechanic employed and working on behalf of the out-sourced company for maintenance died in this unfortunate accident and his co-worker is injured and being treated but is out of danger. Three lab employees working in the lab sustained minor injuries and were back to work after first aid,” said the University.
