German homeowners recommend heat pumps

GERMANY: Nearly 90% of German homeowners are satisfied or very satisfied with their heat pump and over 80% would recommend the technology to relatives and friends, a new survey reveals.
The survey by Civey, the German market and technology data opinion company, was published today on behalf of heat pump manufacturer Vaillant.
The survey gathered opinions from 1,500 owners of new and existing buildings who have installed a heat pump in the past five years.
The two most frequently cited reasons for recommending a heat pump were independence from fossil fuels (51.6%) and reduced energy costs (46.5%). Owners of existing buildings primarily recommended their heat pump because of the reduction in energy costs.
Nearly one-third of homeowners (31.7%) cited low CO2 emissions as a reason for recommending the heat pump. A similar number of homeowners (31.6%) considered heat pumps to be a future-proof technology and would therefore recommend them.
Nearly a quarter of respondents (23.9%) believed that installing a heat pump increased property value.
“We rarely measure such clear levels of satisfaction and willingness to recommend, which speaks volumes about the high efficiency and user-friendliness of heat pumps,” commented Dr Benjamin Seifert, head of data analysis and consulting at Civey. “Other product groups or industries generally achieve significantly lower values.”
Civey also surveyed owners of existing properties about the renovation costs associated with installing heat pumps. Around 55% of respondents modernised their homes either not at all (27.7%) or only minimally (27.2%), for example, by replacing individual radiators. Another 16% used the heat pump installation as an opportunity to undertake individual renovation measures, including replacing individual windows. Almost a quarter of respondents (24.7%) combined the installation with a comprehensive renovation of the building.
