Honeywell releases A2L blends for US market

USA: Honeywell has announced the commercial availability of its lower GWP A2L refrigerant blends for the North American market.

These include the Solstice-branded gases R455A, R454A and R454C. These HFO/HFC blend refrigerants have been available in Europe for at least four years, being cleared by component manufacturers and adopted by a number of European manufacturers. They have also been SNAP-listed for use in specific commercial refrigeration applications since last year.

With the news comes the announcement that Heatcraft has become the first commercial refrigeration manufacturer in North America to employ R455A. Developed and marketed by Honeywell as Solstice L40X, R455A is an A2L blend of R1234yf, R32 and CO2 and has a GWP of 146.

Honeywell and Heatcraft have been working together since 2023 to optimise the refrigerant for Heatcraft’s condensing units and evaporators for walk-in coolers and freezers.

The other Honeywell refrigerants, R454A and R454C, are different proportional blends of R32 and R1234yf. R454A has a GWP of 239 and R454C is lower at 148.
