Kigali Amendment boost for COP27

USA: In a flurry of activity before next week’s COP27 meeting in Egypt, three more countries – Philippines, Nauru and Belarus – have ratified the Kigali Amendment to phase down HFC refrigerants.
Following the addition of the USA at the beginning of this week, and the three new countries added on November 3, the official UN country list of ratification, accession, acceptance, approval or succession now numbers 143.
Agreed by all 197 parties to the Montreal Protocol in October 2016, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol commits countries to cut the production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80% over the next 30 years. It is estimated that a global implementation of the Kigali Amendment would prevent up to 80 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent of emissions by 2050.
