GERMANY: Glass door manufacturer Schott has won a German Design Council Gold award for its refrigerated cabinet automatic door opening system.

The Schott Termofrost Smart Access hands-free glass door system won the highest honour in the Retail category of the annual German Design Awards. The awards recognise high-quality product and communication designs, all of which are considered ground-breaking in the international design landscape. While the majority of entries were submitted by German companies, institutions, and individuals, there were 758 international entries. In total, 45 products/projects received the Gold award.

Schott’s latest award follows its success at EuroShop in March when it won the the AIT (Architektur Innenarchitektur Technischer Ausbau) innovation award.

The Termofrost Smart Access doors for refrigerated cabinets uses motion detection sensors to open hands-free. Made entirely of glass with no frame, the door system provides shoppers a panoramic view of and easy access to products.

Schott developed the fridge door system with Aachen-based design company NOA Design for the German supermarket chain REWE.

The official award ceremony will be held in February 2018 during Ambiente, the consumer goods trade show, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
