Serial smuggler sentenced to probation
5th April 2026
USA: A Texas court has sentenced a serial refrigerant smuggler to serve three-years probation and 25 hours of community service.
Paul Edward Bautista was stopped in October 2024 attempting to cross the US-Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas, with 17 cylinders of R410A, R32, R134A, and R125 refrigerant inside his SUV.
Upon questioning, Bautista is said to have admitted that he knew it was unlawful to bring refrigerants into the United States without a license or other required permission. He pleaded guilty to the smuggling charge.
Bautista had previously been stopped in January 2023, attempting to smuggle an “excess amount of freon in his vehicle” and was returned to Mexico. He tried again in May 2024, and was fined $5,000 and returned to Mexico.
