Significant price rise for higher GWP refrigerants
26th February 2025EUROPE: Significant price increases of around 20% were witnessed in high GWP refrigerants in the final quarter of 2024, compared to 2023.
The latest quarterly report, compiled by independent consultants Öko-Recherche, CiTEPA in cooperation with PROZON and CONAIF on behalf of the European Commission, R134a was up 21% in Q4, compared to the same quarter in 2023. R404A increased 18% and R410A 17%.
The figure are drawn from responses from refrigerant producers, distributors, OEMs and end users.

The prices of R404A alternative R452A was up 7% in Q4 2024, compared to the previous quarter; R448A and R449A both increased 3%, while “natural” refrigerants R744 (CO2) and R290 (propane) were down 2% and 3%, respectively. R32 was also down 3%.
The purchase price of reclaimed R404A was 97% the price of virgin R404A material in Q4 2024. Compared to Q3/2024, the purchase price of reclaimed R404A decreased by 8% and 7% on distributor and service company level, respectively. Two out of three producers that participated in the survey have stopped offering R404A.

The price of quota authorisations were down 5% on Q3 2024, ranging from €13 to €20 per tonne CO2e, with average selling prices at €15.9 per tonne CO2e.
