Significant price rise for higher GWP refrigerants

EUROPE: Significant price increases of around 20% were witnessed in high GWP refrigerants in the final quarter of 2024, compared to 2023.

The latest quarterly report, compiled by independent consultants Öko-Recherche, CiTEPA in cooperation with PROZON and CONAIF on behalf of the European Commission, R134a was up 21% in Q4, compared to the same quarter in 2023. R404A increased 18% and R410A 17%.

The figure are drawn from responses from refrigerant producers, distributors, OEMs and end users.

The development of average relative HFC selling prices reported by all gas producers that participatedin the survey. At the producer level, prices decreased by 3% on average from last quarter. Two out of three producers that participated in the survey have stopped offering R404A, hence a price update on this refrigerant is unavailable

The prices of R404A alternative R452A was up 7% in Q4 2024, compared to the previous quarter; R448A and R449A both increased 3%, while “natural” refrigerants R744 (CO2) and R290 (propane) were down 2% and 3%, respectively. R32 was also down 3%.

The purchase price of reclaimed R404A was 97% the price of virgin R404A material in Q4 2024. Compared to Q3/2024, the purchase price of reclaimed R404A decreased by 8% and 7% on distributor and service company level, respectively. Two out of three producers that participated in the survey have stopped offering R404A.

The development of average HFC purchase prices reported by all OEMs that participated in the survey. At the OEM level, prices increased by 17% for R32, 14% for R513A, 3% and 2% for R448A and R449A, whereas R290 showed a decrease of 4%. Prices at OEM level are usually determined by longer term fixed price agreements
