Trials of refrigerated trailer using liquid nitrogen
8th July 2026
SPAIN: Spanish logistics company Primafrio has concluded a pilot project to integrate a cryogenic system using liquid nitrogen and solar energy in a refrigerated trailer.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Carburos Metálicos (Air Products Group), Cryotrucks, and Apollo-Power, allowed for the testing of a liquid nitrogen (LIN)-based refrigeration solution for refrigerated semi-trailers under real-world operating conditions.
The use of nitrogen is said to have allowed for an estimated reduction of approximately 49 tons of CO₂e per year per semi-trailer.
Carburos Metálicos provided the liquid nitrogen supply necessary for the tests, as well as the specific refuelling infrastructure through a mobile station designed to guarantee safe and efficient operation.
Apollo-Power contributed to the project by installing eight lightweight, flexible solar panels on the semi-trailer, with a total capacity of 2.48kW and an estimated daily production of between 8.5kWh and 12.5kWh. The energy generated powered the unit’s auxiliary and control systems.
For its part, Cryotrucks supplied and integrated the cryogenic system responsible for storing and evaporating the liquid nitrogen.
