US governor makes HEPA filters mandatory in malls

USA: New York governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that high efficiency filters will need to be fitted in shopping mall air conditioning systems before they are allowed to reopen.

With coronavirus lockdown measures now looking to be relaxed, the governor of New York has announced that air conditioning filters with an ASHRAE MERV rating capable of filtering Covid-19 particles or similar air exchange measures will be mandatory for large mall re-openings.

A Covis-19 particle is approximately 0.125 microns in diameter.

According to Cuomo, filters with a high MERV, such as HEPA filters, have been shown to help reduce the presence of Covid-19 in air filtration systems.

“Any malls that will open in New York, large malls, we will make it mandatory that they have air filtration systems that can filter out the Covid virus,” Cuomo announced.
