Committee backs delinking gas and electricity prices

UK: The UK government should move all remaining energy transition policy costs from electricity costs onto the price of gas on energy bills, advises a new select committee report.
The Commons Energy Security and Net Zero Committee says that this is a key step to making the transition away from fossil fuels economical for consumers.
“Government must speed up its work delinking the price of gas from the price of electricity and make better use of its tools to bring down wholesale costs,” it says.
It also insists that future policy costs must not be placed on billpayers.
“Relying on consumers to bear all of the costs of the energy transition is potentially the biggest barrier to achieving the Clean Power 2030 target: the energy system should be adapted so the whole sector contributes to the cost of necessary electricity infrastructure,” the committee says.
The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and its associated public bodies.
