INDIA: Seven people are reported to have died and over 70 hospitalised following an ammonia gas leak at a seafood factory in Tamil Nadu.
Several other people remain in critical condition following the incident today at an unnamed seafood processing and export facility near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
It is reported that the gas escaped from the unit’s refrigeration system and rapidly spread through sections of the factory, creating panic amongst its 120 workers.
Workers exposed to the gas experienced severe breathing difficulties, with doctors confirming that some were suffering from serious respiratory complications due to prolonged exposure to the gas.
The Federal news platform carries claims that residents had made three previous complaints about the factory.
