Chemours trials immersion cooling fluid

USA: Chemours has launched a full-scale product trial of its new two-phase immersion cooling fluid Opteon 2P50 with Japanese IT company NTT Data and engineering firm, Hibiya Engineering.

The proprietary HFO-based 2P50 two-phase immersion cooling (2-PIC) fluid, was first announced by Chemours in 2023 for next-generation computing and electric vehicle technologies.

The new trial follows successful lab testing of Opteon 2P50 and aims to explore next-generation cooling technologies that ensure optimal computing performance, while supporting significant gains in data centre efficiency and sustainability

Two-phase immersion cooling involves a dielectric liquid boiling and turning into vapour when in direct contact with hot server parts. The vapour rises and condenses on a heat exchanger (condenser) above the surface, returning to a liquid state in a perpetual and passive cycle.

Liquid temperature remains constant. There is no need for pumps for the cooling process – only a small auxiliary pump is used to circulate the fluid through a filter.

“Opteon 2P50 directly addresses the growing heat generation and energy use challenges facing data centres, and we believe this trial will help address key value chain questions,” said Kouhei Kurotaki, deputy manager of NTT Data’s technology consulting division.

“By driving joint verification and specification we can fully meet customer requirements, support safe construction and operation, provide more sustainable IT services, and ultimately accelerate adoption of innovative technologies.”

The field trial intends to engage a wide range of industry participants from data centre operators, equipment manufacturers, and engineering design firms to IT vendors and research institutions.

“Joining forces with these industry leaders for an Opteon™ 2P50 field trial represents an exciting step forward in our journey to help solve the big data energy and water crisis,” said Chemours’ liquid cooling venture leader Izabela Jasinska,.

“As AI adoption grows and next generation graphics and central processing chips become the standard, traditional cooling technologies simply cannot keep up. We developed Opteon™ 2P50 specifically for data centers, to not only increase the performance and efficiency criteria, but also to dramatically reduce the environmental footprint of data centres around the globe.”

Chemours have not revealed the HFO fluid behind Opteon 2P50, but says it has has a GWP of 10 under AR6. It also claims superior performance capabilities compared to traditional or single-phase cooling technologies.
