Customs discover HFCs hidden in LPG tanks

POLAND: Not for the first time, attempts to smuggle refrigerant into Poland in car LPG tanks have been foiled by customs officers in Poland.

In the latest incident an attempt to smuggle over 80 litres of R134a and R404A refrigerants was foiled by Polish customs and tax service officers at the Bobrowniki border crossing between Poland and Belarus.

The gases were smuggled by two Belarusian drivers in specially adapted LPG gas cylinders in their cars.

The officers discovered the modified LPG gas systems during an inspection of two passenger cars. It turned out that the modifications were intended to adapt the systems to transport R134a and R404A refrigerants.

In total, officers seized over 80 litres of refrigerant in two cylinders.

Tax criminal proceedings have been initiated against the drivers and the vehicles used for the smuggling attempt seized.
