JCI closes $65m investment in Accelsius

USA: Johnson Controls has led a $65m funding of two-phase, direct-to-chip liquid cooling company Accelsius.

The Series B funding round also received strategic investment from Legrand, a global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures.

Accelsius was established by US corporation Innventure in 2022, when it acquired the rights to the technology in 2022 from Nokia Bell Labs, a subsidiary of Finnish telecom company Nokia.

Johnson Controls announced its investment in Accelsius in October, at a time when demand is rising for robust liquid-cooling solutions capable of managing the extreme thermal densities of next-generation high-performance compute and AI chips.

Legrand brings a vast portfolio of data center infrastructure solutions, including power distribution, rack infrastructure and connectivity.

Accelsius was established by US corporation Innventure in 2022, when it acquired the rights to the technology from Nokia Bell Labs, a subsidiary of Finnish telecom company Nokia.

The company’s NeuCool two-phase liquid cooling technology uses non-conductive fluids in high efficiency loops. It is said to enable 35% opex savings over single-phase direct-to-chip and 8-17% total cost of ownership savings.

“AI-scale computing is rewriting the thermal playbook. Our investment in Accelsius aligns with Johnson Controls’ strategy and commitment to deliver advanced, high-efficiency cooling solutions that enable operators to deliver AI solutions rapidly, now and in the future,” said Austin Domenici, vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls’ global data centre solutions business.

The Series B capital will accelerate Accelsius’ expansion of its Austin production facility. A member of NVIDIA’s Inception programme, the company is building new thermal reference designs that allow for significantly greater cooling capacity than previously considered possible, enabling operators to deploy high-performance GPUs at density without compromising efficiency or sustainability.

The NeuCool technology was recently deployed across a 300MW campus for DarkNX in Ontario.
