Orbia advises on using new car AC gases

UK: Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials has published new service procedure standards for its next-generation vehicle AC refrigerants, Klea Edge 444A and Klea 456A.

A post on the company’s website insists that the best practice standards are designed to equip service technicians globally with the knowledge and tools necessary to work safely and effectively with the new refrigerants, ensuring optimal performance and environmental benefit.

The global standards outline how to retrofit vehicles from R134a (A1) to R456A (A1) and R1234yf (A2L) to R444A (A2L), as well as providing servicing instructions for vehicles already using the new refrigerants.

“Proactively setting these service procedure guidelines is crucial for the successful adoption of R444A and R456A in the automotive aftermarket,” said Chuck Abbott, Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials’ global marketing manager. “By providing clear guidelines, we are supporting technicians and the entire industry in safely transitioning to lower GWP refrigerants.”

First announced in 2023, R444A is promoted as a compatible, cheaper alternative to R1234yf. It blends R1234ze(E) with 12% R32 and 5% R152a and has a GWP of 92 under AR4.

R456A is a non-flammable blend of R32 (6%), R134a (45%) and R1234ze(E) (49%). It has a GWP of 626.

Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials warns that vehicle warranties and local regulations should be consulted.

The service procedures can be found on the Orbia Fluor website.
