Over 600,000 minifridges recalled

USA: Over 600,000 Frigidaire-brand minifridges have been recalled in the USA after reports of short circuits causing more than $700,000 of property damage.

The recall issued by Curtis International advises that the Chinese-manufactured minifridges’ internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards.

The company says it has received at least 26 reports of the minifridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating and catching fire. In addition to the property damages, two consumers reported smoke inhalation injuries.

The issues concern certain models and serial numbers of units bought from Walmart and other stores nationwide and online between January 2020 and December 2023 for between $36 and $40.

The model numbers of the affected units, which carry the Frigidaire name on the front of the units, are EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149 and EFMIS175. The minifridges were sold in 6- and 9-can sizes and were sold in a variety of colours, including black, blue, green, white, yellow, red, pink and silver.

The model and serial numbers are on a label on the back of the minifridge.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled minifridges and follow the instructions to receive a refund at www.recallrtr.com/minifridge.

Further details and the affected serial numbers are listed on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
