Qvantum opens heat pump R&D lab in Hungary
15th April 2025
HUNGARY: Swedish heat pump manufacturer Qvantum has opened a new research and development lab at the company’s factory in Nyíregyháza, Hungary.
Quantum is gradually converting the 68,000m2 Nyíregyháza refrigeration plant it acquired from Electrolux in 2023 to become a heat pump factory with an initial capacity of more than 300,000 units per year. The Nyíregyháza facility is Qvantum’s third factory after Limhamn and Åstorp in Sweden.
A first step in the conversion is the opening of R&D operations. Some 45+ Electrolux engineers are working with product development and design for manufacturing. About 1/3 of the engineers are working with testing and evaluations
The new 600m2 lab provides comprehensive testing capabilities in multiple climate chambers for air-to-water heat pumps, exhaust air heat pumps and geothermal (liquid-to-water) heat pumps.
In addition to the development laboratory, Qvantum has also opened a transport and packaging testing laboratory and statistical laboratory for quality assurance.
“The types of test we will be doing in Nyiregyhaza is more comprehensive and long term testing compared to the development laboratory we have in Sweden close to the R&D department,” explained Qvantum CEO Fredrik Rosenqvist.
“This is an important first step in preparing for the launch of our mass-production factory,” said Qvantum COO Federico Rosales. “The establishment of this lab underscores our dedication to advancing technology and maintaining our leadership position in the industry.”
There are currently said to be around 130 employees on site, but a production start date has not yet been announced.
