Recycled steel enters Swegon’s serial production

SWEDEN: After thorough tests and evaluations, Swedish HVAC manufacturer Swegon is to introduce recycled and renewably produced steel in its high-volume serial production.

Swegon reached an agreement with steel supplier ArcelorMittal at the end of 2022 to buy recycled and renewably produced steel. ArcelorMittal’s XCarb RRP Magnelis steel was tested and evaluated in several of Sweden’s production sites during 2023 and a concept air handling unit using the new steel was displayed at the ISH trade fair in March of that year.

Swegon says it will now introduce XCarb steel as standard into high-volume serial production of air handling units.

“We have now started to completely replace our purchase of traditional steel by XCarb steel for specific batches,” said Swegon’s supply chain director Robert Siverby. “During 2024 we will phase in XCarb steel and replace conventional steel with low carbon emission steel for most of the internal steel in our air handling units produced in Kvänum. We will also continue to evaluate this steel for additional product groups.”

According to ArcelorMittal, Magnelis produced with XCarb steel has an approximately 70% lower CO2 footprint than traditionally manufactured steel. XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel  is mainly produced from recycled steel and uses 100% renewable energy in the manufacturing process.
