Solstice licences A-Gas to reclaim low GWP blends

EUROPE: Refrigerant manufacturer Solstice has signed an agreement allowing leading lifecycle refrigerant management company A-Gas to recover and reclaim its patented lower GWP refrigerant blends.

The agreement, which covers the UK and Europe, is aimed at expanding the supply and availability of compliant refrigerants using reclaimed materials.

A-Gas will use its advanced recovery and reclamation capabilities to produce Solstice patented HFC/HFO blends to AHRI 700 standards.

According to the announcement, the blends are designed for use in existing refrigeration systems, thus reducing the need for virgin refrigerant production while supporting emissions-reduction goals.

However, the specific refrigerant blends to which the agreement applies have not been revealed. All it says is that the blends are widely used in supermarket refrigeration systems, convenience-store display cases, cold‑storage warehouses and refrigerated-transport applications such as temperature‑controlled trucks and containers supporting the retail food cold chain.

Fellow manufacturer Chemours previously approved A-Gas as a reclaimer of R448A, the Solstice-patented non-flammable retrofit for legacy R404A and R507 systems. It is thought that the new agreement covers Solstice patented refrigerants such as R455A and R454C, the A2L alternatives to R404A, as well as the R410A alternative R454B and R515B, a replacement for R134a.

Solstice will supply the HFOs to A-Gas for the reclaimed HFC refrigerant blends.

“AGas’ lifecycle refrigerant management model supports and enables end-of-life gases to be recovered, reclaimed to AHRI 700 standards and returned to the market,” commented A-Gas CEO Jack Govers. “This process helps preserve valuable resources, avoid or minimise emissions and support compliance as the industry adapts to accelerated HFC phase down requirements.”
